Poetry Jam! Wednesday 4/28

April 22nd, 2010 at 7:43

Interested in showing off your poetry skills? Then come to the LMS’s Poetry Jam on Wednesday, April 28, at 6pm.

To celebrate National Poetry Month, you’ll perform either an Original poem, a two-voice poem, or recite one of your favorite poems. Here is your opportunity to earn a few extra credit points, as well.

Here’s what you do:

1. Reply to this post by Monday evening with a comment stating that you want to participate . In the comment, give the category (Original, Two-Voice, or Favorite poem), the poem title and author. I must have this no later than Monday evening.

2. PRACTICE reading/performing your poem. You must not merely read it. Make it dramatic and fun for the audience to listen to.

3. Come to the Poetry Jam on Wednesday night at 6. Feel free to bring along friends and parents. You must stay the entire time. It should last about an hour.

4. You’ll earn 5% extra credit points to your Writing category as an extra credit bonus.

5. If your favorite poem is already mentioned, please pick another. We do not want to hear “Speech to the Young” 14 times!

Let me know if you have any questions.

I would be interested in participating in “original”. I’d like to read my poem “The Coward”. Also, what is up with the last comment?

  3. 6AddieS Says:

I would like to particapate in the peotry jam on wendnesday my poem is an “original” and it is called “uganda”

  4. 6AllisonJ Says:

I would like to participate in “original” with my poem called “Weeping Willow”.
Unless I can use a short song as my Favorite Poem… because music is poetry!

  5. 5KiahB Says:

Ooh! Allison, I love that poem of yours! Also, can we maybe read more than one, Mr. Coia? I have a feeling that my poem “‘Racist!’” would be inappropriate for this occasion, but I might also read “The Victim”. Also, do we need to memorize the poem or can we read the paper? Because “The Victim” is 4 pages long.

  6. 6AllisonJ Says:

    You wrote a poem that’s 4 pages long??? Dang…
I showed my sister that poem; she liked it too. But i think the short song would be good as well as my favorite. (Kiah you read it it was the one in my pencil case!) You asked me if I’d written it and I said “I wish!”. Plus I’ve already memorized it… so…

  7. 5KiahB Says:

Oh yeah, that was good… I think you should recite both… if we’re allowed to. Mr. Coia!

  8. 6AllisonJ Says:

Can we? That would be AwEsOmE!

  9. mrcoia Says:

You can only perform one poem, so pick your best one. (Perhaps you could bring a second poem just in case there is time).

You need not memorize it, but rehearse it enough that you are not merely reading it. Perform it.

  10. 6AllisonJ Says:

Oh, okay… this is gonna be a hard decision.

Also Becca said that all 99 roots weren’t in studystack… She just wanted me to tell you that. Not so sure why.

  11. 5KiahB Says:

Hi Mr. Coia, this is Faith, Kiah’s younger sister. Hello and Goodbye.

  12. 5KiahB Says:

Sorry about that, my siser is obsessed, she thinks everyone cares about what she has to say (sound like anyone else we know?). Anyway, I will read “The Coward”. Allison, I think you should read the poem that you wrote. Also Mr. Coia, my sister said, “It’s [the poetry jam] only 5 extra credit points? I wouldn’t do that for only 5 points!”

  13. 5KiahB Says:

*Fifth word was supposed to be “sister”, sorry.

  14. mrcoia Says:

    Kiah,

Tell Ms. Faith that it is 5 percentage points, not just a mere 5 points. This will take up your writing category up an entire half of letter grade. It’s a big jump, trust me.

Oh, what fun little sisters are!

  18. Collin Beasley Says:
