Visualization and Word Choice

Goal: To encourage development of visualization through word choice.

Part I

Link: Put Your Mother On The Ceiling, Introduce the imagination game, Animals, establish a signal for the group, play the game, 10 minutes.

Teach: Words create pictures. Writers can create pictures in their readers heads. This book has words and pictures go along. Read the Accidental Zucchini. 10 minutes

Active Engagement: I’ll bet you can think of some more word pictures on your own. Think about a letter and come up with a word combination for it. Put your hand on your head when you’re ready to share. Share your idea with your partner. Who would like to share with the group? Group share. 5-10 minutes.

Invite: Choose one of your ideas and create an image for it. Make sure the image can show the idea of the words on its own. 15 minutes.

Share: Share your image with the group. Let’s see if we can guess the words without seeing them. 5-10 minutes.

Part II

Link: Remember how we created images to go with words? Well it can work the other way too, images can create words.

Teaching: Imagine a Night is a book with images that create stories in our heads. I’ll share the book, but just the images. Think of the words, which might go with the pictures as we go through the book. 5 minutes.

Active Engagement: Let’s look at the first image together. Think of the words that might go with it. Share your ideas with your partner. Does anyone want to share with the group? 5 minutes.

Invite: I have made copies of the images in the book. Please choose one of the images and write about it. You may make a list, a poem, a story or letter, anything you want to write. Remember to use words that help make a picture in your reader’s head. 20 minutes

Share: Let’s hear some of your writing together. Show us the image you chose and read your writing. We’ll be listening for words that make pictures. 5 minutes.
